Accessible Accommodation in Outback Australia – The River Suite

ACCESSIBLE OUTBACK LUXURY

Are you looking for accessible accommodation on the way to Broken Hill? Nestled near the historic heart of the station, The River Suite offers a refined sanctuary designed with both luxury and inclusivity in mind. This beautifully appointed, wheelchair-accessible accommodation suite serves as a serene home base for couples or solo travellers seeking to reconnect with the rhythm of the land.

Bathed in natural light from large double-glazed windows, the space frames private, sweeping views of the property, allowing you to wake up to the quiet beauty of the outback from the comfort of a plush king bed. Whether you are stopping in as part of a scenic road trip or settling in for an immersive stay, The River Suite blends modern sophistication with the raw, rusted charm of the Central West, providing a restful “nest” just a short stroll from the warmth of the Shearers Quarters Guest Lounge.

The River Suite offers a seamless blend of sophisticated comfort and thoughtful accessibility, ensuring every guest can experience the station’s quiet luxury. The spacious ensuite is fully equipped with an accessible walk-in shower, grab rails, an accessible toilet, and a vanity mirrored with hand-crafted amenities from Native Secrets just down the road in Dubbo. Please note that while the suite is designed as accessible accommodation, all our units are elevated to protect against the river’s occasional rising, with access via a gentle 45-metre ramp.

Inside, you’ll find what is undoubtedly the comfiest bed this side of the Blue Mountains—a plush king bed draped in luxury linens with a pillow selection to ensure a perfect night’s sleep. Expansive double-glazed windows wrap around the sleeping area, framing private, sun-drenched views across the vast property.

To keep you perfectly comfortable regardless of the outback weather, the suite features:

  • Year-round Climate Control: Individually controlled reverse-cycle air conditioning, supplemented by electric blankets and feather doonas for those crisp country nights.
  • Station Conveniences: A bar fridge, microwave, kettle, toaster, and all necessary cutlery, crockery, and glassware, plus an iron and ironing board.
  • Luxury Extras: Premium waffle robes, pool towels, a Bluetooth speaker, and a hairdryer.

Please note: To maintain the comfort of our guests, our suites have a maximum occupancy of two and children under eight years must share a room with an adult. Please ask about our new accommodation The Lorries if you require 2 adjoining bedrooms for a more comfortable stay with little folk!

The River Suite can be booked on our self contained Escape packages or added to a Sky Suite group booking on our all inclusive Indulge packages if accessible or additional rooms are required.

How accessible is the River Suite for guests with limited mobility?

The River Suite was purposefully designed to offer a luxury experience that is inclusive and comfortable. The ensuite features a spacious walk-in shower, secure grab rails, and an accessible toilet and vanity. Due to our proximity to the river, the suite is elevated to protect against flooding; however, it is easily reached via a dedicated, gentle ramp (Please note due to the height of the building the ramp is approximately 45 metres in length.) Please keep in mind that as the suite is uniquely housed within a repurposed shipping container, the bedroom area is quite cosy for wheelchair access. Don’t hesitate to give us a call to chat through how we can ensure your stay is as smooth and enjoyable as possible!

What self-catering facilities are available in the suite?

While many of our guests join us for Chef Angie’s paddock-to-plate dining, the River Suite is well-equipped for your convenience. You will find a bar fridge, microwave, kettle, and toaster, along with a selection of cutlery, crockery, and glassware. Whether you are enjoying a quiet morning tea or a glass of local wine as the sun sets, you’ll have everything you need at your fingertips.

How easily can I navigate the station grounds and dining areas in a wheelchair?

We strive to make our rugged outback setting as welcoming as possible, though the natural terrain does have its quirks. The historic Shearers Quarters, which houses our dining hall and guest lounge, is fully accessible via a dedicated ramp, ensuring everyone can enjoy Chef Angie’s long-table feasts and the warmth of our hospitality. Between the buildings, we have gravel paths that connect the accommodation to the main hub; however, as we are a working station, the ground can be uneven in places and may require a bit of extra care or assistance for some manual chairs.
